Paying for Therapy
I offer an initial phone consultation at no
charge. The purpose of this consultation is to determine your needs,
whether we are a good match, and whether your needs fit within my
scope of practice and expertise. If your needs are outside my specialty
area(s), I'll be happy to refer you to a qualified provider.
After the initial consultation, if we agree
to work together, my current rate is $110 per 50-minute session.
Cash and checks are accepted, or we may arrange a credit card payment.
Most clients prefer a "pay as you go" policy, and pay
for each individual session at the time of service.I
also offer a sliding scale based on income and extraordinary expenses.
Insurance
Using health insurance to pay for therapy can definitely
save clients money. If you are interested in using health insurance
to pay for therapy sessions, please let me know. If I am included
in the provider network for your plan, then I can bill them directly
for the services and you will be responsible only for the co-payment
specified in your plan. If your plan covers out-of-network mental
health care, then I will provide a monthly statement that you can
submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement, to the extent
to which they cover mental health treatment.
Asking insurance companies to pay for therapy can impose certain
conditions. These can include:
- Requiring pre-authorization for services, at the beginning of
treatment and over the lifetime of working together. Usually this
is not insurmountable; it may impose slight delays until the authorization
is obtained.
- Paying only for a certain number of sessions. Usually the number
of sessions covered is dependent on the diagnosis under which
the treatment is being reported.
- Adding a diagnosis code to your permanent medical record for
a mental health-related condition. This can have consequences
such as impairing your ability to get health insurance or life
insurance coverage in the future.
- Requiring me to release copies of confidential information from
your therapy medical records to the insurance carrier, in order
for payment to be made.
- Insurance companies do not pay for missed sessions. For any
session that is missed without prior notification, except for
emergencies, the full fee must be paid directly by the client.
- In rare cases, getting payment from insurance companies (such
as Workman’s Comp) can require a client to take legal action,
which means that parts of your medical record may become a part
of the court record.
- Obtaining payment from insurance companies may involve electronic
billing. In all situations, I am fully HIPPAA compliant, which
includes using appropriate security measures when using electronic
communications that include confidential client information. Nonetheless,
some clients are not comfortable with electronic transmission
of their medical information.
If you would like to use insurance and are not sure when or if
these situations might apply to your specific situation, please
feel free to give me a call to discuss this in detail. Using insurance
can be very helpful in obtaining mental health care; I present this
information only in the interest of helping potential client to
make an informed decision about its benefits and consequences.
If you are considering therapy, but are concerned about the cost
or about using insurance, please call me. I will be happy to discuss
in detail the pros and cons of using insurance to cover therapy
sessions, and any other financial concerns you may have. It may
be possible to reach a private-pay agreement that is affordable
for you by establishing a reduced fee based on your income and any
extraordinary expenses. In some cases it may also be appropriate
to meet less frequently than weekly; or for short-term therapy involving
a pre-determined number of sessions. If we are unable to find a
mutually agreeable fee and schedule for therapy, I will be happy
to give you referrals to other resources, or to help you to locate
an alternative provider.

Supervision and Consultation
My fee for Consultation is $100 / hour. For
ongoing supervision, I would be happy to develop a quote based on
